About the play
THE SPEAKEASY is an immersive theatre experience that transports audience members back in time to the Roarin’ 1920s. The physical environment is a recreation of an authentic San Francisco speakeasy, featuring a Bar, a Vaudeville Cabaret, a back-room Casino, a performers Dressing Room (where a one-way mirror allows audience members to view private moments), and other secret and hidden spaces. Audience members are free to wander throughout the venue, where they can enjoy prohibition inspired cocktails, watch Vaudevillian entertainers (magicians, ventriloquists, singers, dancers, comedians), and participate in casino games on our blackjack, roulette, and craps tables (for entertainment purposes only). In addition, a cast of 25 actors inhabit the space, portraying both the speakeasy’s guests (Bootleggers; suffragettes; flappers; et al) and its staff (bartenders, bouncers, chorus girls, and others), and perform “slice-of-life” story lines. Audience members can follow characters from room to room, or stay in place as scenes unfold before them.
